sweat bby, sweat zine
Sweat Bby, Sweat is a zine that celebrates friendship, female gaze, and the power of connection in Tokyo.
Kabir, one of my close friends that I made in Tokyo came to me wanting to collaborate and do a photoshoot before he moved back to Canada. When we had first met, we talked about feminism and the female gaze, and his newly acquired love for the sports drink, Pocari Sweat. He joked that he would try to keep and collect every bottle that he consumed. Eight months later, before he was set to move, he casually mentioned that despite it initially being a mere joke, he had been in fact collecting all of his empty Pocari Sweat bottles. I proposed that for our shoot, we fill my bathtub with the bottles and take some photos. On the date of our shoot, he pulled up to my house in a taxi cab with 6 large garbage bags filled with empty bottles. I have never been more shocked, appalled, and excited.
I directed, designed, and produced a zine with the photos that I took.
